PROTOTYPE
This much-requested and widely travelled First Generation DMU, providing the ideal companion for other HELJAN OO gauge models, including the Class 25, 45 and 47.
BR Class 104 DMU built by Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Co. for the London Midland and North Eastern Regions. CAD work is in progress and images will be released as soon as design work is complete. This model will be available in a wide range of BR liveries covering the life of the class from 1957 until retirement of the final sets in 1993.
With 302 vehicles built to six different car types, the ‘104s’ are the largest group of BR diesel railcars not currently available in ready-to-run form. The only previous RTR model was produced for ‘TT’ gauge in the late-1950s.
Although synonymous with the Manchester area and the routes to Buxton and Blackpool, the units worked across a wide area of northern England and the Midlands and towards the end of their career ventured further afield to Scotland and the south-east of England.
MODEL
The new HELJAN OO gauge Class 104 will feature a low profile mechanism powering one car per set, switchable interior and exterior lighting features, a 21-pin DCC decoder interface and provision for DCC sound. Options for factory-fitted DCC sound on all models are being investigated and will be announced separately. External features will include authentic detail variations appropriate to period and livery, a highly-detailed interior and underframe, separate handrails and sprung buffers.

This OO Scale DMU model train set receives excellent ratings, with customers praising its "smooth running" performance and "wealth of small detail." I just couldn't resist the livery especially as I love ScotRail stock from spotting in the 80,s up there.
As expected like all my heljan stock over many years it runs magically smooth from the box.

A very smooth running model with a wealth of small detail, I must find my magnifying glass to read some of the tiny printed detail.

Excellent
This two car DMU has excellent if slightly tricky connectivity between the driving and trailing unit. Everything works perfectly on DC. The detailing is good. The paint job is excellent although the actual design of the same is rather unique and colourful. I am sure it is true to prototype. The lights all work on analogue. The interior seems well defined and decorated. I have not tried to access the motor but access seems fairly straightforward.
Excellent little machine, got more detail than you can imagine and runs like a dream.

The Class 104 is very impressive and I look forward to fitting sound and passenger figures soon. There are a few issues which have been well documented such as the connecting plug being on the powered vehicle. Also the visible wiring. I will see what I can do to hide this.
I placed a comment based on the first two exhibitions the model worked. . The Model itself is superb and 'turned heads' whenever it appeared on the layout. Other than the couplings that carry the appearance of fragility, the only drawback I found was the connection between the two halves of the unit. . packing up at the end of the day, I found it difficult to detach with ease, and was forced to utilise a pair of spade tweezers to get a decent grip on the mail part of the plug to remove. Other than that superb.
This is a model I'd been wanting for a long time. I was put off by the high initial price but seeing it for under £200 it was a no-brainer. It looks superb and ran beautifully straight from the box. With lights etc it is a very good model indeed. Two small niggles: one window is not fully fitted and will need the body removing to solve and trying to uncouple the 8-pin connector was very fiddly - but it is still a super model.
I think it’s a great model. It’s just a shame that all the electronics are visible in the garden. Well the other hand it does perform brilliantly and look really good too.
