The BR Class 02 0-4-0DH built by Yorkshire Engine Co. for dock shunting and goods yard duties in northern England. These tiny four-wheeled shunters were designed to reach the places other locomotives could not; with a wheelbase of just 6ft they were able to tackle sharply curved lines in streets, docks, warehouses and factories and even use traditional wagon turntables. They were a direct replacement for the legendary Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway ‘Pug’ 0-4-0STs working dock lines in Liverpool, Manchester and beyond.
Around 50 similar locomotives were built for industrial railways, in many cases with electric rather than hydraulic transmission. As the work they were built for vanished in the 1960s, many of the 20-strong class found further work in industry, with some surviving well into the 1980s before being rescued for preservation. Highly regarded by crews for their Rolls-Royce engine, all-round visibility and unique (for a BR locomotive) rear platform for shunting staff, they continue to play a useful role in shunting and engineering work at heritage railways.
One locomotive, D2860, was even claimed by the National Railway Museum as the perfect shunter for its Great Hall in York.

Customers praised this O Scale diesel shunter as a "fantastic model" with "superb" detailing and smooth running. Most found it ideal for small layouts and shunting operations. Some noted minor paint scheme errors and occasional stalling issues. Support received high marks for quick warranty replacements and helpful service.
Good model - but a couple of things to put right!
This is a great little loco for my small O gauge shunting plank layout and as part of my collection. It looks the part and seems to be fairly accurate as a representation of the prototype. Straight from the box it ran well and quite quietly on 12V DC, no doubt it will improve with running in. This is my third O2 since the price drop. I do not think that the foam in the packaging is as resilient as that used in the 48DS box but it appears to be adequate.
For this review to be fair I should point out that the loco I am reviewing here is one I received today as a warranty replacement. The previous one shed a coupling road after a couple of metres running. Heljan's online return system worked easily enough and even with a bank holiday to cope with my replacement only took five days. Good service. I'm happy.
This review is a bit different. The model is superb and runs sweetly out of the box when tested on 12V DC. However I want to a huge "Thank you" to Heljan support. Due to a rather toxic blend of stupidity, clumsiness and ignorance I managed to badly damage the pc board on my brand-new O gauge O2 diesel. Entirely my own fault. I dropped a weekend email to Heljan support and it had been answered by the Tuesday morning. I was asked a few questions and was then quoted a very reasonable price for a replacement pcb. I agreed to the offer, got an invoice, paid it and the part was with me within a week. I just fitted it today, very carefully, and all works as it should on 12V DC. Cannot fault them and congrats to Simon on their support desk.
Lovely little BR shunter ideal for a micro rural goods yard. Good service, quickly dispatched and well packed.

Fantastic model. Very happy with it, not had chance to run it yet. Captures the class 02 perfectly. A great addition to my collection and railway.
ID2860 looks really good, the price was brilliant. A few errors in the paint scheme, notably cab roof should be grey not green, but that doesn't bother me, just a lick of paint. Running is not as good as
hoped, tends to stall occasionally, maybe because it only has four wheels. Haulage power is about right for the class. Paint job is superb. I love the model but with a few reservations.
