Played hunt the stakes and found them lying flat against the body. They moved through 90° to the running position. Seriously though a much stronger arrangement than an older HO model I have where they are permanently fixed and susceptible to snapping off. Details. Detail. Its all in the design.

The wagon is a superb detailed replica of the real thing, the level of detail is spot on. The price was excellent for a wagon this size.

I went for these wagons on their initial release and I' m still pleased with them
Bought 6 and all have a bogie which squeaks - I think there's an issue with the bearings. Might be cured with a bit of oil. There also appears to be an issue with the couplings - some derailments on the straight as well as curves (which on my layout are 36" - don't know how others will fair on standard 2nd radius curves!). Again needs investigation. I have managed to get them to run but only slowly, and by switching them around in the rake.
Great. Really long wagon with a lot of detail and presence. Wheel needed a bit of grease on ends to get smoother running but rolling well now.
