In the 1950s and 60s, these 35-ton tanks were the primary method for moving bulk liquids across the UK. Whether it was high-octane spirit or heavy industrial oil, these wagons were a constant presence in mixed freight and dedicated "block" trains. Our models capture the transition from the early steam-era designs to the sleek, modern era of rail freight, making them an essential addition to any mid-century or transition-era layout.
The beauty of a tank wagon lies in its plumbing. We have meticulously recreated the distinct differences between the Class 'A' (for highly flammable spirits) and the Class 'B' (for heavy oils, often featuring heating coils). Our models feature intricate discharge valves, delicate manhole covers, and authentic wire-braced ladders. With a weighted chassis for exceptional tracking, these tanks are designed to look as good as they perform.

These OO scale tank wagons impressed customers with "excellent paint work, sprung buffers" and "well applied livery." Most praised their free-running quality and "unbeatable price." However, some experienced wheel rotation issues requiring lubrication, and one reported a missing buffer. Overall, customers found them great value.

Great wagons
First time I have ever purchased Heljan products and overall very happy with my purchase. Detail and finish is excellent. The reason I have only given 4 Stars is because out of the box these were not free-running.
At first I thought the brake shoes were actually restricting the running and maybe they still are but went to my 25 year + tube of Kadee Greas-Em graphite powder and did a good puff into each axle box and they were immediately transformed into a very good running model. Still not perfect, but definitely a 9 out of 10. I also replaced the tension-lock couplings with Kadee #18 and very pleased to say the NEM pockets on the wagons are in the perfect position. My minimum radius is 24" so may #19 or #20 on smaller radius curves.
My sevcond review of these wagons. Having now been using these on the layout I can confirm that they run very freely including through standard code 100 points and definitely look the part. Very pleased.

The product looks very nice but alas I have to say that the wheels do not rotate freely on the tankers which is a bit dissapointing, If it was Dapol then the tank wagon would have dissappeared on it's own after a gentle push, maybe this is something you may know about.

Wanted to give 5 stars, but one of my tankers had a buffer flat out missing, nowhere to be found. Unacceptable quality issue that should not have gone through. Assuming the tankers arrive in one peace, they are worth grabbing though.
Superb models,now at a superb price,one major improvement which i do to all my fitted stock,is to fit the Fleishmann 6515 NEM coupling,to replace the dreadful tension lock,then you have perfect close coupling,its the best coupling on the market by a country mile,sometimes the brake blocks need to be eased for free running,but the tank wagons are superb
Great set. Having purchased some ESSO examples when first released I had forgotten how good theses are.
