This OO scale locomotive model is praised as a "silky smooth runner" with "beautiful detail" and exceptional value. Customers highlight its powerful motor, quality construction, and excellent performance straight from the box. Some note the BR blue shade is slightly dark, and several mention lights only work with DCC. Minor issues include coupling fitment requiring buffer detail removal.

A lovely model, well built, detailed and finished. A really smooth runner with ample haulage capacity.
Excellent customer support is there if you need it.
Thank you.

Great model although on mine the front headcode has fallen back inside the model at one end so that will have to be fixed.
I thought the tension lock couplings were difficult to fit and of course you’ve got to remove some of the buffer beam detail to use them. I thought this might be the case so I fitted the tension locks to try but then I couldn’t unfit them and in the end the whole coupling assembly at one end pulled away which will now have to be remedied. One of the front end handrails was also loose and had to be reglued.
I’m giving it four out of five stars as at £100 that was acceptable but I would not have wanted to pay full price for it with these faults in which case I may have only scored it three.
I put it alongside my detailed Hornby model and although yours is better it’s not markedly better from the looks point of view although your models performance is superior.
All in all, glad I got it at a discount price which is what made me order it in the first place.

This is a great loco and well worth the £99 it now costs. The motor is fantastic, with very smooth running, and the decoration is very good for the price point. The BR blue is perhaps slightly too dark, which might bother some buyers if they want a pristine display model. For me, though, it is not an issue because I intend to weather it. In fact, the darker shade gives me a useful base for a grimier, work-stained finish. Given the price, performance, and overall presentation, I think it deserves five stars.

Exceptional value, but the cab finish holds it back,
The Class 86 BR Blue E3101 is excellent value at £99.98. At this price, it is far ahead of what you would normally expect, and compared with something like Hornby’s Railroad range, it really is in a different league for detail, running quality and overall specification.
It runs very well, has far more detail than a basic budget model, and the fact it does not rely on traction tyres is a real plus. Mechanically, I have no complaints at all. It is a smooth, capable runner and very good value for money.
The reason I am giving it four stars rather than five is the finish. The BR blue is close, but not quite right to my eye. The bigger issue is around the cab area, where the white looks too bright and stands out too much. The yellow painted over the blue at the front also does not look quite as sharp as it should, and the pantograph has a bright metal finish that looks a little too shiny.
That said, this is still a very good model, especially at this price. I have other Class 86s that I would rate higher, but on this particular version the paint finish holds it back slightly.
With newer Class 86 releases likely to be significantly more expensive, this is still well worth grabbing while available. A great runner, much better than a basic budget model, and exceptional value, but four stars from me.

Excellent model, ran perfectly out of the box and has continued to be a strong and smooth running loco. I don't have catenary wires on my layout, but it still looks great with the rest of my era 6 locos. This 86 was ordered with Class 26 and both were well packaged and arrived the next day.

Great loco, very smooth runner

Mechanically, the locomotive performs faultlessly and the paint finish is spot on. I am disappointed that the red taillights only work on DCC and as with all Heljan locomotives, I have to break the pipes off to fit the coupling.

I have managed to test the loco this evening and it ran well straight from the box & should be even better with a bit of running in. Detail is pretty reasonable especially for the price I paid. The paint is nicely applied but the numbers and emblems could be better. My only complaint would be the head and tail lights only work with DCC

Pleased with the model although a shame all the extra detail is already fitted to be buffer beams which I had to cut off to fit the couplings to allow them to work!

A lovely well detailed model of the AL6 (Class 86) electric locos I saw introduced on the West Coast Mainline.
With its superb Heljan box and packaging it was an ideal Father's Day gift for my adult son.

A lovely loco. Runs well, looks great. I have had to superglue some of the joints on the pantograph to skim under my catenary wires because there is too much spring in the up position. Metal plates and numbers would be a nice add on

The class 86 looks good in original BR Blue. It runs well, the directional route indicator looks good. A shame the directional lights do not work with analogue running.
