Very detailed superb looking model at a bargain price.

I really like the revised version of the Heljan Class 86, particularly the 86/0 & 86/4 variants, and I'm really looking forward to the next release of the 86/2. It's well documented that the body is very difficult to remove, I own 5 of the revised run of Heljan Class 86's and each one has proven troublesome to remove but whilst the body is off I add a crew, bulkhead doors, detonators to each end, cab lights and of course DCC sound. The time spent makes the Heljan Class 86 an awesome model that really looks the part.

This is excellent value for money. At under £100, it's hard to think of another manufacturer that offers this level of detail, smooth performance and overall quality for this price. The BR Blue livery is crisply applied, the separately fitted parts look superb, and the model runs smoothly straight from the box. With directional lighting, a 21-pin DCC socket and sound-ready design, it has all the features most modellers are looking for. If you're after a Class 86 without spending premium prices, this is an outstanding example. Buy it

Came with a cracked axle gear on one of the wheelsets, emailed helpline but no response yet.

Great looking loco and just how I remember seeing them at Birmingham. The model runs well and and has no issue pulling several coaches.

Excellent model really captures the look of the class 86. Superb running.

I appreciate that this model was produced under the previous management, but it is a reasonable reproduction of the original. I don't know if it is a sign of age, but both this and another Class 86 ordered at the same time suffered from a split gear on one of the wheel axles. This meant that both Class 86s were very noisy. However, these faults were reported to Heljan, new management, and they were promptly replaced. Unfortunately, both replacements have the same problem. Rather than return again, I am going to wait until spares arrive and request replacements when that happens. In the meantime, I have removed the offending gears, one per model, and both models run smoothly and silently.

The poor quality of Heljan gears are well known, but hopefully the new management will address this issue for future models. I have given a higher rating than I might otherwise to reflect the very quick and prompt after care provided by the new management.

Always loved the Heljan class 86, this will be my fourth class 86 in my collection now.. Superb model with excellent detail and brilliantly finished livery.

The Heljan Class 86/4 is able to haul trains with up to 12 Mk3 coaches on a 3% incline. It is able to negotiate radius 2 curves (438mm), although the NEM coupling shaft tends to collide with the pre-fitted buffer beam details, causing the model to slow down significantly when returning to a straight section of track, until the coupling shaft manages to break free from the buffer beam details. When the buffer beam details are removed, the model is running faultless.

Please note the model comes with the buffer beam details factory-fitted at both ends of the locomotive. This means, these fine parts need to be removed in order to mount the slim-line tension lock couplings provided. On an expensive model, it would be a serious problem. At the current price of less than 120€, this is acceptable in my opinion.

Otherwise, the Heljan Class 86/4 is a finely detailed model that features operating front lights in direction of travel on DC mode. On DCC mode, independently switchable tail lights can be activated. The sprung-loaded pantograph is sturdy enough to mechanically operate on catenary, although it has no electrical connection. It is mostly made of metal, although its roof support is made pf plastic.

On receiving the model I was impressed with the level of detail in general on this loco. The bogies and items such as the compressor racks were well executed, as was the roof detail.
On powering up (anologue DC) it ran smoothly from stationary straight from the box.
The cab headlights worked well with a crisp white light and these correctly work only on the cab end facing the direction of travel. Sadly, the same cannot be said for the red taillight marker lights, that refused to work at all. I would appreciate some advice as to how that fault can be remedied.

What a great model!

Another great locomotive from Heljan, only one thing I do not like is please put the pipes and conectors front and rear into a bag so that the purchaser can fit their own, so that they clash with the couplings.

Nice model, but the body is extremely difficult to get off. Was an absolute pain to chip. The orange detail parts are made from a very soft plastic, easily broken. Ran like a bag of nuts at first, but appears to have settled down after running in. A couple of the pickups were mis-shapen messes, but were fixable. Hopefully any future batches will have much improved construction.

A replacement arrived quickly, with good comms throughout, this one moves in both directions and headlights work but no tail lights in DCC ready?

Great model - would only move in one direction, and only had headlights working on one end however return was pain free, fast and good comms and response, and subsequent replacement was fast, however......

Lovely traditional 86. Beautfully detailed and a top runner.

Awesome model, smooth rubbing and delivered super quick and in one piece. No complaints, especially at less than £100!
