Customers praised this OO scale locomotive as "excellent value" at under £100, noting "smooth running," strong pulling power, and high detail. The livery and lighting received consistent praise. Some mentioned minor issues with buffer beam detail interfering with couplings and occasional derailments, but most found it "runs like a dream" and a "bargain."

A proper Class 47 at a proper price.

Bought during Heljan’s sale and couldn’t be happier. Smooth runner, plenty of pulling power and the InterCity Executive livery looks superb. The level of detail is excellent and it has real presence on the layout.

At under £100 it felt like a bargain, especially when many new diesel models are now well over £200. Mine has performed faultlessly and looks right at home hauling Mk2s and Mk3s. A cracking model and one of the best purchases I’ve made this year.

What a great model, and at sale price. The class 47 with InterCity Executive livery looks amazing with such a high level of detail. The lighting, both internal and running lights are superb, and the movement is incredibly smooth, even at slow speeds. I'm very pleased with it.

After all the negativity surrounding this loco I disagree granted a few little niggles but for under £100 it’s a steal and a sturdy new member of my fleet.
Well done Heljan

Lovely livery, great runner. These locos are an absolute bargain. Got 3 now and probably going to add at least one more to the fleet

Amazing locomotive for the price.

I got back into the hobby after a 30-year gap; I still had some Hornby and Lima items from back then.

I had a look at Hornby railroad stuff, but with traction tyres and no lights, I thought bugger that.
I continued to buy 2nd hand items from a certain auction site, then these Class 47s became available for £99.

I thought I would give them a try, and I'm amazed at the difference between this and my old 1980's stock.

It's so smooth and quiet with great detailing.

I'm looking forward to further releases from Heljan.

This is an impressive model with excellent weight, smooth running, and strong haulage straight out of the box. The detailed finish is good quality and the running performance is also one of the best I have in my collection. For £99 it is one of the best bargains you can buy and don't be put off by the negative review that most people are watching on YouTube.

Excellent loco. Good build quality, very heavy, and the running quality is excellent, very quiet, very smooth, speed control is realistic, and you can see the effect of the dual fly wheels when speeding up, or slowing down. Excellent value for money.

There has been a lot of extreme discussion and dismissal of this model on YouTube. Personally, I think this has been because the RRP was originally so high. Now this model is now less just less than £100 the fact remains that it is a fairly heavy, smooth running loco, with front and rear working lights at each end, plus cab lighting. Yes, if you analyse it closely one can find shortcomings in minor details but to me it is a smart model that looks like a Class 47 running around my layout. I even do not think that the cab door handrails are too prominent.
I have partially infilled the hole in the roof, which I believe is meant to be to do with either the exhaust or the steam generator (of original types of the Class). To do this did involve carefully removing the very snug fitting body. At least the cab lighting wires were sufficiently long to avoid this being too traumatic.
Now all I have to do is cut back some of the buffer beam details to fit the couplings. Unfortunately, Heljan have always fitted this detail rather than leave it to modellers to fit as they choose. I would have thought it would have been cheaper for them to save the labour in the factory to avoid all the grief they get for pre-fitting it.
Overall, it was very easy for me to justify buying this very smart loco for the price.

A very nice model to come from Heljan. The model is flawless and I really like the livery of this one hence my rating of 5 stars.

A superbly solid model with plenty of weight and excellent build quality. The motor is strong and delivers very smooth running, with the dual flywheels clearly noticeable when accelerating and slowing down. Overall, it feels powerful, refined, and reliable on the track. An excellent locomotive and well worth the £99 price tag.

I’ve ordered this a second time for my collection. My review can be found here and was 5 stars. The second example does have a quality control issue and the bogie assembly is faulty and falling out of the body. Heljan customer service are hopefully arranging an exchange, so just recommend you check your loco is one of the good ones as soon as you get it.

Absolutely stunning loco and true representation of the Class 47. Livery is spot on, love the way the extra detail is placed on the loco as I find it to be a hassle with other manufacturers. Smooth and unbelievable slow running, so shunting and coupling up is spot on too

The Heljan Class 47 delivers far higher build quality and packaging standards than Hornby Railroad at essentially the same price, making it outstanding value. It isn’t perfect — not every wheel is powered or picking up — but the overall experience more than compensates. The model is big, heavy, smooth‑running and free of traction tyres, which gives it a far more refined feel.

A lot of online criticism feels like nit‑picking for the sake of it. In practice, it looks like a Class 47, has the presence you expect, and the dimensional precision is good enough that any tiny deviations are hard to spot unless you’re actively hunting for them. For anyone who prioritises running qualities, weight, and overall robustness, this is a genuinely impressive model that punches well above its price point.

The Heljan 47. Hated by so many, and so many modellers refuse to purchase on the back of what others have said about it. Now I have photographed it next to a top-spec class 47 from another manufacturer, which cost three times as much as this Heljan version, not that much in it really.

Sure! The Heljan version has its faults, but unless you're an over-obsessed rivet counter in search of perfection to the tiniest detail, this model will still give you hours of fun. At less than £100 and fairly robust, it is the ideal loco for the younger modellers to learn the joys of model railway with.
Ignore the haters, ignore the so-called influencers and reviewers that supposedly support this hobby. It is your hobby, buy what you like.

The problems as regards the inaccuracies are well documented elsewhere .Despite that it still looks like a Class 47 and I found it to be well put together . It also runs like a Rolls Royce and I couldnt fault the performance . For the money comparing other makes its well worth the new price tag and doesnt surprise me that that many including this model have been sold out .
