Bygget i Glasgow af NBL i begyndelsen af 1950'erne, blev 10800 oprindeligt bestilt af LMS som en del af deres banebrydende undersøgelser i hovedlinje dieseltræk. Det blev forestillet som ækvivalenten til 3MT tanklokomotiver til lettere passager- og godstransport og var udstyret med en 827hk Paxman dieselmotor. Det blev endelig leveret til BR i 1952 og blev testet på London Midland, Southern og (kortvarigt) Eastern Regions. Efter tilbagetrækning fra BR i 1959 blev det solgt til Brush og brugt som testbænk for nyt trækudstyr, før det til sidst blev skrottet i 1976.
I fodsporene på deres tidligere OO Scale prototype dieselmotorer, såsom Lion, Kestrel og DP2, vil 10800 blive produceret i begrænsede mængder i fire versioner, der skildrer NBL-maskinen i post-1954 SR/LMR og den endelige BR-tilstand med senere eksterne modificationer.

This OO scale diesel locomotive model receives exceptional praise from customers. Shoppers highlight "exceptional value" at the direct price point and describe it as "ultra quiet and smooth running." Unique loco and exceptional value
The Heljan 10800 in BR Black Early Emblem weathered finish is a very unusual and characterful locomotive, and at £99.98 it represents exceptional value for money.
This is exactly where Heljan selling direct to the customer really benefits the modeller. This model originally sat at around £264.95, so the current Heljan direct price is roughly 62% lower. Even compared with examples still appearing elsewhere at around £169.50, the direct price is around £69.52 cheaper. For a ready-to-run OO gauge locomotive of this type, that is phenomenal value.
The subject itself is also fascinating. 10800 is a unique prototype diesel, so Heljan were naturally limited in how many versions they could produce, with variations around black or green livery, BR early or late emblem, and weathered or unweathered finishes. That makes it a really interesting model to own.
The only slight criticism is the factory weathering. It is acceptable, but fairly average, and I think it could have been more convincing. That said, it gives a useful base to work from, and I can easily improve it with some additional weathering. But....that price cannot be beaten. I also got an unweathered version and that's just amazing.
The model itself looks excellent, has real character, and is a great addition to the layout. At this price, even with average factory weathering, it is impossible to ignore the value.

A lovely loco my second and the weathered version is superb
A lovely model which captures the 'care worn" look of the prototype with the factory weathered finish. Fitting DCC sound was really easy as well and the loco sounds great with a sound matching the appearance. All in all I'm very pleased with it and the price that I paid was the icing on the cake!

Loco arrived quickly and well packaged. Unlike its prototype equivalent, the "wonder engine" (Southern crews used to say I wonder if it will work today), this model is ultra quiet and smooth running. A credit to Heljan! Thank you.
